This will be the last winter that you can swim at either Merrylands or Wentworthville Swimming Centres.

Holroyd Council has decided that it can save $221,000 by not opening the two centres during the winter season. The decision was announced to the user groups at the Annual Swim Centres Committee Meeting on May 5th. Merrylands has already closed its doors for the winter, with Wentworthville to follow on the 30th June. Neither centre will re-open until early October 2010 with both centres closing again at the end of March, 2011.

The closure of the pools coincides with the Swim Centres Review that Council is currently conducting. Consultants have been hired to assess the feasibility of closing the three existing centres and building a single new Aquatic/Leisure Centre, at a location to be determined.

As part of the consultation process, Council has produced a questionnaire to determine the needs to be catered for by any future centre. All club members, regardless of age, are encouraged to complete the questionnaire which can be completed online and is accessible below.

Council's decision to close both Merrylands and Wentworthville from April to October will greatly affect the club's activities. The decision has effectively signalled the end of the club's Winter Competition and Pre-Season time trials and it will also heavily impact on the training of the club's swimming squads during the winter months.

Furthermore, the Swim Centres Review and its outcomes have the potential to have an even larger impact on the activities of the club. The future of the club’s Learn to Swim Program and Swimming Squad Program will be in doubt as will the very existence of the club itself.

Members are urged to complete the questionnaire here before Wednesday, June 2nd.
