Holroyd Council has sent out a ballot via mail to all residents of the LGA, asking for their view on the future course of action to be taken concerning the council operated swimming centres.

Residents are being asked to choose one of the following 3 options:
  1. Commence repairs of the existing 3 swimming centres, and undertake reconstruction over time.
  2. Close the existing three swimming centres and develop a new Aquatic Leisure Centre.
  3. Residents who do not want swimming centres across the Holroyd LGA have the option of indicating that they do not support the centres at all.
The club is encouraging all members to select Option 1 for the following reasons:
  • Option 1 is the only option that ensures the club has somewhere to swim.
  • Option 2 does not state where the new centre would be built. The consultants that the council engaged identified the site of the existing Merrylands Swimming Centre as the preferred site, however a number of the Councillors prefer the Hyland Road site in Greystanes.*
  • Option 3 could result in the closure of one or more swimming centres.
All club members are encouraged to complete the ballot selecting Option 1 and return it to Holroyd Council via the supplied reply paid envelope by the 27th April, 2012.

* The club supports the construction of a new Aquatic Leisure Centre on the site of the current Merrylands Swimming Centre as recommended by the consultants appointed by the Council. The Hyland Road site is on the edge of the city, located away from the majority of the council’s residents and the proposal for the new centre initially only includes an indoor 25m pool. The club supports the development of a new centre, but it must include a 50m pool as part of the first stage and it must be centrally located.
