Day 4

An exciting finish to the Australian Championships as the final day saw our members swim another 10 personal best times and take home 1 more medal.

The 200m Freestyle was the first event of the day and the rivalries of yesterday's 400m Freestyle were fresh in our swimmer's minds. Shelley Zerni set the standard early, taking 3.62 seconds off her best time to finish in 2:32.69. Alison Sakurovs was in the following heat and rose to the challenge, taking a massive 5.76 seconds off her best to finish in 2:28.79. Ian Wilson was up next, and although he couldn't better Alison's time, it pushed him to a new PB of 2:30.19, and at least bragging rights over Shelley. Lauren Leckie (2:45.93) and Kylee Murray (3:05.33) also had great swims and finished with new personal best times, while Margaret Edwards was only 0.47 outside her best time. Peter Johnston was unable to beat Alison's time and ended up losing their overall freestyle challenge. As Alison was not so humble with her defeat of Peter she will be doing exclusive butterfly training for the next 3 months.

The 50m Breaststroke was the next event on the program, with 8 of our team competing and Kylee and Shelley "I can't swim Breaststroke either", both swimming new personal best times. It must have been all those 70 year olds in Shelley's heat that spurred her on to finish 15 seconds faster than her entry time.

Alison and Ian Wilson were our competitors in the 100m Butterfly, with both swimming new personal best times of 1:16.14 and 1:24.14.

The 200m Individual Medley was the final individual event of the meet. Alison and Lauren both finsished off with new PBs of 2:53.78 and 3:18.78. Peter and Ian Wilson had the fastest Individual Medley times out of the Merrylands Swimmers which apparently trumped any previous rivalries as according to our President: "People only remember the last swim of the meet anyway."

The final events of the meet were the Mens and Womens 4x50m Freestyle Relays. As with yesterday, the girls set a time that the guys couldn't match, but the guys had a great swim in a close race to take home the Bronze medal which gave them bragging rights.

An excellent performance by our entire team over a long 4 days. Well done to you all!
