16 Medals at Australian Masters 30th April, 2014

Merrylands’ Masters Team achieved some outstanding results at the Australian Masters Championships last week. Our 5 member team returned from the 5 day meet in Rockhampton with 16 Medals and 23 new Personal Best times.

Held at the newly redeveloped Southside Memorial Pool in Rockhampton, Queensland, from April 23-27, the Australian Masters Championships brought together the top Masters Swimmers in the country, to go head to head in the pool and the open water, with some excellent results for our club.

Our 2 individual medallists, Steven Nguyen and Ian Wilson, each swam 6 new personal best times at the meet. Ian started off the meet in style, with a 10 second PB and Bronze medal in the 400m Individual Medley, which will go nicely with his Bronze in the same event at the 2013 Championships. A steady flow of PBs and medals followed as Ian finished the meet with 5 individual Bronze medals in total.
Steven swam PBs in all but 3 of his events, with his highlight being his first sub-29 second 50m Butterfly, and 9 medals in total, including Gold in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke.

Ian Johnston swam 8 new personal best times at the meet, with a new PB in every event he swam, including massive PBs in his 100m and 200m Breaststroke, while Tricia Johnston swam 3 new PBs which included taking a huge 32 second off her 200m Breaststroke.

Graham Edwards was the club's 5th swimmer at the meet, with a new PB in the 50m Freestyle. Our club also won our first ever relay medals as Ian, Steven, Ian and Graham won Silver in the 4x50m Medley Relay and Bronze in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay.

To top it all off, at the Presentation Dinner, Club Coach Peter Johnston was named as the 2013 Masters Swimming Australia Coach of the Year.

As a club we finished in 27th place on 194 points. The team had a great time away, with plenty of Fitness, Friendship and Fun. Congratulations to them on their results!
