Mr John Smart joined the club in 1970.
As a qualified timekeeper and judge he was able to officiate at any of the club’s carnivals,
Cumberland and State meets and of course our Saturday morning races.
For many years he was the secretary of the race committee. He also made the lane numbers used at our
races and carnivals.
Jack, as he was affectionately known, really enjoyed giving stroke correction to the younger and
“not so young” members of the club. He also encouraged people to “enjoy life while you’ve got it
because once you get that wooden overcoat on it’s too late”.
When he passed away in September 2000 his family decided to donate a trophy –
The John “Jack” Smart Encouragement Award –
to perpetuate his memory and the work he did for the club.
